Dr. Ambrish Mithal
Dr. Ambrish Mithal is presently the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare (Pan Max), a group of 18 hospitals.
Dr. Mithal is the first DM in Endocrinology from AIIMS New Delhi (1987). Subsequently he joined the faculty at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences Lucknow where he was instrumental in establishing the department, as well as the DM training program. In the 1990s he was a recipient of the Fogarty Fellowship (Harvard Medical School) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Fellowship which enabled him to establish India’s first osteoporosis program and bone density measurement system at SGPGI.
In 1998 he moved to the Apollo hospital in Delhi where he served as Senior Consultant till 2009. He then took over as the Chairman of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Medanta, a position he continued to hold till he moved to Max. In all three institutions he established the DNB training program in Endocrinology.
Dr Mithal has won several awards in his career. Prominent among them are the Padma Bhushan (2015) and the B C Roy Award (2015). In 2021 he became the first Indian to receive the Laureate Award for international excellence by the Endocrine Society (US). He was the first Indian to be awarded the Boy Frame award by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research in 2004 and was awarded a fellowship of the same society in 2021.
Dr Mithal has also been bestowed with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF)–Amgen Health Professionals Award (2013), the IOF President’s Award (2016), World India Diabetes Foundation (WIDF) Outstanding Achievement Award (2021). In 2013 he was awarded the Springer Citation prize for his paper on “Global Vitamin D Status”
Dr Mithal is member of the Board and Committee of Scientific Advisors, IOF. He is also a member of the WHO Bone Health Expert Group (BOHEG).
Dr. Mithal is the Past President of Endocrine Society of India and the founder of Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR). He has served on various government committees and has been President, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur; Member, Governing Council, Indian Council for Medical Research; and domain expert on the Governing board of the National Health Authority.
Dr Mithal’s research interest focuses on bone and mineral disorders, and diabetes/ MASLD. He was among the first to establish the existence of vitamin D deficiency in India (in the 1990s), a passion he pursues till now. He has played an important role in the vitamin D fortification program of the FSSAI/ government.
